Lasting Impact from an event in 1987?

For English we have to write a research paper. The topic this year was years, so we pulled a year and I got 1987. I'm going to end up writing a 7 - 12 page paper on an event. But I'm not quite writing just about the event, it needs to be about the significance and how it has impacted us. An example she gave us was how we can start with our general topic of a movie and turn it into a paper about how it the fact that it was the first all African American cast and write about how that has affected us. I know about Black Monday, but I don't think I can write about a lasting impact about that and make a 10 page research paper about it. Any help would be appreciated! I already searched google and looked at wikipedia - they have the whole year mapped out. But I can't really come up with something that left a lasting impact. Thanks so much for any help!
