Is this supposed to be taken literally? or am i taking it too the extreme?

I have visited a few websites geared toward giving advice to aspiring writers, one of the advice I got from it was to read all sorts of books. I have a few family members who are writers they tell me it is important to read a variety of books to improve as a writer. Since i aspire to become an young adult fiction writer. I was planning on selecting young adult fiction books from different genres as a way to improve my style of writing and learn more what type of writing appeals more to the youth. My plan was to read maybe a teen health book, a teen biography book and so on. What do you think of my idea? your honesty is much appreciated
