How do I use the fishing rod in Digimon world for playstation?

I cast the rod and nothing ever happens except that when fish get near, a red X appears. Pressing X when that happens does nothing but reel in my bait. Am I using the wrong bait? If so, where do i find the right bait and what is the right bait? And what'll I do once a fish actually bites?
